Lesson 3 homework practice subtract integers
Question:
What are the seven characteristics of integers?
Answer:
When subtracting two whole integers, we swap the signs of the numbers being subtracted. -2-(-5) is equivalent to -2+5, for instance. A value of 5 is still 5, while a value of -2 is still 2. Two from five yields three. When subtracting, use the sign of the greater integer. Absolute values are subtracted, and the sign of the larger integer is retained. Whenever you put two positive numbers together, you get another positive number. Any time you add two negative numbers together, you get still another negative number. Any positive number can be obtained by subtracting another positive number from itself. Subtracting two negative numbers might result in either a positive or a negative result.
